Red Spot 15 Year Old is a single pot still Irish whiskey made at Midleton Distillery for the Dublin wine merchants Mitchell & Son. It is bottled at 46% without chill filtration, in a 750ml bottle.
It matures for a minimum of 15 years in a combination of American bourbon casks, Spanish Oloroso sherry butts and Sicilian Marsala wine casks. The red spot recalls the merchant's habit of marking casks with paint to show their intended age, red denoting fifteen years. The whiskey disappeared in the mid-1960s and returned in November 2018.
Pot still spice, cooked fruit, baked apple, mango and black cherry lead the nose, over hazelnut, new leather and toasted oak. The palate is ripe and sweet from the Marsala casks, with sweet red pepper and cracked black pepper, and the finish is extra long.
