The plantation where Rhum J.M is produced was originally a sugar refinery. Jean-Marie Martin bought the property in 1845 and shifted its focus from sugar to rum. The sugarcane grows on the steep slopes of Mont Pelée, and the distillery highlights four terroir factors: fertile volcanic soil, tropical humidity, sea-breeze ventilation and good drainage. All of the distillery's sugarcane is grown there, and the cane is pressed within one hour of harvest to preserve its aromas.
