This is a 40 Year Old tawny Port from Sandeman, made in the Douro Valley in Portugal. It is a blend, not a vintage wine, and the age statement refers to the average age of the component wines.
The wines in the blend are roughly 30 to 55 years old and have matured in seasoned oak casks, then are assembled so the house style stays consistent from one bottling to the next. Sandeman, founded in 1790 and now part of Sogrape Vinhos, ages its tawnies in traditional pipas at its Vila Nova de Gaia lodges.
It is intense amber-gold with copper highlights. The nose is vanilla, oak and honey, and the palate turns to dried fruits, warm spice, walnut, caramel and dried fig with a silky texture. The finish is long.
