Strathisla 1953/2019 is a Speyside single malt from the Gordon & MacPhail Private Collection, distilled in 1953 and bottled in 2019 at 43.5% ABV in a 70cl bottle. It matured for 66 years in a first-fill sherry butt, which gives a dark mahogany colour, and 138 bottles were filled.
On the nose, dried fruit and a pronounced sherry note come with wood polish, candied fruit and orange oil, ending in clove, nutmeg and allspice before a faint menthol fade. The palate opens with wood and autumn berries, then candied ginger, dark chocolate and a little aniseed. The finish balances fruit and oak, with nutty notes and light, lingering tobacco.
