Talisker Xpedition Oak: Glacial Edge is a 45 year old single malt from the Isle of Skye, bottled at 49.8% in a 70cl bottle. Only 2,455 bottles were released worldwide.
It was finished in ex-Canadian whisky barrels that spent 96 hours in the Arctic, in what is thought to be the first use of ice-fractured casks. Twelve barrels were taken there and then returned to the distillery. A portion of profits goes to Parley, a marine conservation organisation.
The nose is dry and mellow, with seaweed, sand dunes, fig, sultana and prune. The palate is sweet and mouth-filling, with pepper, salted caramel and a wisp of smoke. The finish is very long, with candle wax and chilli.
