The Balvenie DoubleWood 12 is a Speyside single malt Scotch whisky from the distillery in Dufftown, bottled at 43% ABV in a 750ml bottle.
It is aged for twelve years in second- or third-fill American oak ex-bourbon barrels, then spends a further nine months in first-fill Oloroso sherry butts. The casks then marry in large oak tuns for three to four months before bottling. The cask-finishing technique was pioneered by malt master David Stewart in 1982.
The nose has ripe peach, honeydew melon, marzipan and cedarwood. The palate brings vanilla, butterscotch, stewed stone fruit, dates and baking spice. The finish is medium, with wood spice and dried raisin.
