This is a 16 year old Speyside single malt from The Balvenie, bottled at 47.6% in a 70cl bottle. It is the distillery's first finish in French oak, created by Malt Master David C. Stewart MBE.
The whisky was first aged in American oak, then moved to French oak casks that previously held Pineau des Charentes, the fortified wine of the Cognac region. That brings a velvety sweetness with grapefruit, geranium, glazed fruit and ginger.
The nose is gingerbread and sponge cake with a splash of grapefruit. The palate has almond pastries, honeyed apricot, geranium, buttery vanilla and toasted cedar, and the finish returns to citrus and honey with a hint of honeydew melon.
