The Balvenie DoubleWood is a 12-year-old single malt, sold here in a 70cl bottle. It was first released in 1993, using a technique Malt Master David Stewart devised in 1982. 2018 marked the 25th anniversary of DoubleWood.
The whisky spends at least 12 years in traditional whisky casks, American oak ex-whiskey barrels and hogsheads, then moves to Spanish oak ex-Oloroso sherry barrels for a further nine months. It then rests for three to four months in large oak tuns, where the casks are married together.
The nose has sweet fruit and sherry notes with honey and vanilla. The palate is smooth, with nutty sweetness, cinnamon spice and a gentle layer of sherry.
