The Balvenie DoubleWood 12 Year Old is a Speyside single malt from the distillery at Dufftown, bottled at 43% ABV. Most of the maturation takes place in American ex-bourbon oak casks, after which the whisky is finished for several months in first-fill European oak Oloroso sherry butts.
The colour is rich golden amber with copper tones. The nose opens with honey, vanilla and soft fruit such as sultanas and orchard fruit, then oak spice and toasted nuts, with dried fruit from the sherry.
On the palate it is smooth and sweet, with vanilla and oak, then plums, cherries, nuts and a hint of cinnamon and nutmeg. The finish is medium to fairly long, warming and lightly drying.
