The Balvenie French Oak 16 Year Old is a Speyside single malt in a 70cl bottle, bottled at 47.6% ABV. It spends 16 years in American oak, then moves into French oak casks that previously held Pineau des Charentes, a fortified wine from France.
The American oak adds vanilla, honey and warm spice, while the Pineau casks bring citrus and a floral character.
On the nose there are lotus, geranium, meadow grass and crisp apple skin. The palate has tangy lemon rind, grapefruit zest, glazed fruits and ginger spice, leading to a clean, fairly short finish.
