The Macallan 18 Years Double Cask is a single malt from the Macallan distillery at Craigellachie in Speyside, in a 70cl bottle. The Double Cask range draws on the period when Scotch whisky was matured only in ex-sherry casks.
The whisky spends at least 18 years in a mix of American and European oak casks that held sherry. The American oak adds delicate vanilla, citrus and butterscotch, while the European oak brings a fine spice.
The nose has dried fruit, orange and ripe apple, then milk chocolate and a hint of caramel. The palate balances sweet spice with smoky touches, alongside vanilla, orange peel and cigars. The finish is very long, with cinnamon and a slightly peppery edge.
