The Macallan Edition No. 5 is the fifth bottling in The Macallan's Edition Series, released in autumn 2019. Its theme is colour, and the packaging was developed with the Pantone Color Institute around a bold shade of purple.
Sarah Burgess selected the whisky from 100% American oak casks sourced from three Spanish bodegas. The recipe combines five cask types: first fill ex-bourbon barrels, second fill refill hogsheads and butts, first fill Tonsa hogsheads and butts, first fill Vasyma butts, and first fill Hudosa hogsheads and butts.
It is bottled at 48.5% in a 750ml bottle, with natural colour and no chill filtration. The American oak is said to give a brighter, vanilla-led character with orchard fruit.
