The Macallan Red Collection 50 Years Old is a single malt Scotch whisky bottled at 45.1% abv, in a 70cl bottle. It matured in sherry seasoned casks and barrels and comes in an oak box made from the same European oak used for Macallan's casks.
The red of the collection draws on the Choice Old series, released in 1903 and reportedly shipped in cases marked with red print. It also nods to Alexander Reid, who founded Macallan in 1824; his surname means 'the red'.
The nose offers antique oak, soft leather, cocoa and black cherries. The palate brings dried fruit and wood spice, then dates, dark chocolate and orange oil. The finish is long, with raisins, dates and crème brûlée.
