This is a 21-year-old Bowmore from Islay, distilled in 2000 and bottled by Wilson & Morgan at 56.5% after an Oloroso finish. Bowmore is known among Islay malts for being only moderately peated, and the long maturation has softened the smoke further.
The nose opens with candied oranges, flowers and strongly farmyard notes, then leather and damp earth, settling into oak reminiscent of an old library. On the palate there are overripe tropical fruits, orange and raisins, surprisingly sweet at first. Peat smoke builds slowly, joined by red tea, liquorice root and an earthy, spicy, tannic oak. It is juicy and robust, yet well rounded.
