Yamazaki 18 Year Old is a single malt from Yamazaki, Japan's oldest malt distillery, founded in 1923 by Shinjiro Torii between Osaka and Kyoto. It was first released in 1992 and comes in a 750ml bottle at 43% (86 proof). It is made from malted barley in copper pot stills. Roughly 80% of the whisky was matured in Spanish sherry butts, with the rest in American oak and Japanese Mizunara oak, the last bringing a sandalwood and incense character. The nose offers truffles, bitter marmalade, resin, potpourri, sherry, sandalwood and incense. On the palate come blackberry, strawberry jam, dark chocolate, honey, toffee apple, plum wine, black pepper, rancio and tobacco. The finish is long and fruity, led by marmalade, with sweet ginger and spice.
