Yamazaki 18 Year Old is a Japanese single malt from Suntory's Yamazaki Distillery, founded in 1923 in a valley south of Kyoto. About 80% of the whisky is matured in sherry butts, with the rest in American oak and Mizunara oak casks. It is bottled at 43% in a 70cl bottle.
It won Best Japanese Single Malt at the 2015 World Whiskies Awards.
The nose is truffles, thick bitter marmalade and resin, with potpourri and heavy oloroso sherry. The palate is rich and bittersweet: heather roots, cigar leaves, honey, toffee apples, plum wine and black pepper, with a touch of rancio. The finish is long, fruity and led by marmalade.
