San Clemente Montepulciano d'Abruzzo DOC Riserva is Zaccagnini's most intense expression of Montepulciano. Made in Abruzzo, it is deep red with violet reflections. The nose is rich and articulated, with rose, blueberry jam, white pepper, cumin, liquorice and mineral graphite nuances. On the palate it is broad and voluminous, supported by dense, vital tannins and pleasant freshness. The grapes are normally hand-harvested in the second decade of October from medium-textured, clay-leaning soils with southern exposure. After destemming, they ferment for 15-20 days in 50-hectolitre oak vats at 28-30 °C, followed by 18 months of ageing, 9 of them in barrique. Serve at 16-18 °C in a balloon glass with ragù pasta, mushroom risotto, game or important red meats.
