The Exciseman is the third volume in Arran's Smuggler's Series. It was matured in ex-bourbon quarter casks and Madeira casks, the Madeira chosen in honour of the illicit distillers who made whisky on Arran over a hundred years ago and sourced their casks from Madeira smugglers. It is bottled at 56.8% in a 70cl bottle.
Despite the name, the distillery says the whisky pays tribute to those who strove to outwit the Government's representatives.
The nose is honeyed, with coastal freshness, apples, vanilla, spice and toasted oak. The palate is sweet and rounded, with apple and vanilla, and candied lemon appears with water. The finish is long and fresh, with apple and citrus.
