Basil Hayden is a Kentucky straight bourbon from the Jim Beam Distillery in Clermont, bottled at 40% ABV (80 proof) in a 75cl bottle. It was one of the four original expressions in the Small Batch Bourbon Collection, created by Master Distiller Booker Noe in 1992.
The mash bill uses twice the rye of a standard bourbon, and the name honours Meredith Basil Hayden Sr., a Kentucky distiller who used extra rye in his own whiskey.
Peppermint, pepper and gentle honey sweetness come through on the nose, with subtle citrus and vanilla. The palate is spicy yet smooth, with caramel and honey, and the finish is warm and lightly peppery.
