Basil Hayden is a Kentucky straight bourbon in the Small Batch Collection from Beam Suntory, bottled at 40% (80 proof) in a 75cl bottle. Booker Noe created it in 1992 as a tribute to Meredith Basil Hayden Sr., a Maryland distiller who put a generous amount of rye into his mash.
The mashbill is high in rye, at around 63 percent corn, 27 percent rye and 10 percent malted barley. The whiskey is matured in charred American oak.
It is light golden amber. The nose is charred oak and sweet vanilla caramel with dried fruit, a hint of peppermint and light citrus. The palate is light and smooth, with brown sugar, gentle black pepper, spicy rye and a touch of corn, and the finish is lingering charred oak with a touch of dried fruit.
