Benromach Contrasts: Peat Smoke is an experimental bottling from the Forres distillery, a heavily peated counterpoint to its lightly smoky house style. Distilled in 2014 from malt peated to 57 ppm, against about 10 to 12 ppm for the core range, it matured for nine years in first-fill bourbon casks only. It was bottled in 2024 as a small-batch edition at 46%, with natural colour and no chill-filtration.
The nose has rich smoke, fragrant vanilla and bright citrus peel, then apple and white chocolate. The palate brings toasted oak, honey and ripe sweet fruit, followed by butterscotch, marshmallow, lemon sorbet and sweet smoke. The finish is full and sweet, with the warmth of glowing embers.
