Black Velvet is a blended Canadian whisky made at the Black Velvet Distillery in Lethbridge, Alberta. It is bottled at 40% and aged for approximately three years.
Its method is called "blended at birth", introduced by master distiller Jack Napier in 1951. The component spirits, made from rye, corn and other grains, are combined at distillation rather than at bottling, then matured together in oak.
Vanilla, caramel and soft maple show on the nose. The palate is sweet, with caramel, honey and butterscotch, and the finish turns spicy with rye and a hint of toasted bread.
