Blue Spot disappeared from shelves in the 1960s, and Mitchell & Son has now relaunched it as a seven year old single pot still Irish whiskey. It is triple distilled, drawn from bourbon, sherry and Madeira casks, and bottled at cask strength, 59.1% ABV, in a 70cl bottle.
The nose opens with ginger, nutmeg and cinnamon, followed by banana custard, apple pie and frangipane tart. The palate is full-bodied and creamy, with black and Sichuan pepper, vanilla, green apple, peaches, lemon peel and toasted hazelnuts. The finish is long, with milk chocolate creaminess, fresh fruit, nuts and a touch of rum.
