Tri Carragh is a 16 year old single malt from Braeval, a Speyside distillery whose releases are seldom seen. It was distilled in 2010 and bottled at 62.7% in a 70cl bottle. Just 92 bottles will be released.
After its main maturation the whisky spent seven months finishing in a second-fill red wine octave, which adds a zesty, berry character along with subtle tannins and structure.
The nose brings red apples, orange peel, pomegranate and raspberry, with delicate floral and grassy notes. On the palate, red berries and orchard fruits move towards redcurrants, cranberry and pink peppercorn. The finish is drying, with red fruits, gentle spice and a hint of wood smoke.
