Cú Dhub is a single malt from Speyside Distillery, created in 2008 for the Danish distributor Mac Y. The name is Gaelic for 'black dog', and the whisky was inspired by Loch Dhu, the dark cult whisky of the 1990s. Its jet-black colour comes from heavy use of spirit caramel rather than deep cask ageing. It is bottled at 40% ABV.
The nose is sweet and smoky, with tobacco, burnt wood, liquorice root, vanilla and molasses, and a cool, mentholic lift. The palate is smooth and warming, led by liquorice and vanilla, with a subtle malt backbone. The finish is medium in length, with sweetness, dark roast coffee, malt and a faint smoky char.
