A 12-year-old Speyside single malt from Balmenach, released as an independent bottling in the Deerstalker series, which draws on lesser-known distilleries.
Balmenach dates from 1824, the year the first legal licence was granted there. It has released no distillery bottlings of its malt since new owners took over in 1997.
The nose is fresh and winey with tart fruit, faint vanilla and a sweetness of candy sugar or syrup. The palate opens tart, moving to fresh fruit and a hint of smoke. The finish is full, with vanilla, stewed fruit and mixed spice.
