Founder's Reserve Rye is a nine-year-old Kentucky rye whiskey from Duke, made from a mash bill of 95% rye and 5% malted barley. It is aged in American oak, then in French oak barrels that previously held Napa Cabernet from St. Helena, Howell Mountain and Rutherford, and Duke's Reserve Kentucky Straight Bourbon.
The Double Barrel name comes from a second conditioning in once-used barrels that held Duke's five-year-old Kentucky straight bourbon. The French oak comes from the Jupilles and Tronçais forests and was coopered by Taransaud and Demptos.
Cherry oak, almond and vanilla open the tasting, with a hint of anise, woody spices and smooth smokiness leading to a warming finish.
