This Glen Albyn spent 43 years in a single refill sherry puncheon. It was distilled on 19 September 1979 and bottled by Gordon & MacPhail on 9 January 2023 for the Private Collection, as part of the second Recollection Series of whiskies from closed distilleries.
Only 95 hand-blown crystal decanters were filled, at a cask strength of 56.4%, without chill-filtration or added colour.
The nose opens with strong roasted coffee and fruit cake, then light spice, beeswax polish, toffee with dark syrup, charred oak and a hint of dark chocolate truffle. The palate is smooth, with dried figs, dark cherries and orange peel moving into dark chocolate and black pepper. The finish is full, with oak and liquorice.
