Lagavulin 12 Year Old is the 2024 Diageo Special Release from Islay, called Fireside Tales and bottled at 57.4% ABV. It was matured in ex-Bourbon and refill casks.
It opens with an unexpected sweetness and shows less of the smoky character usually associated with Lagavulin. Iodine and salt shape the palate more than the fattier style of the 16 year old.
The nose combines fruit, phenolic notes and dry ash smoke. The palate is creamy and complex, with sweetness giving way to dry, salty, smoky flavours. The finish is long, with salty peat and dry spice.
