Lagavulin 16 Year Old is a heavily peated Islay single malt from the distillery on the island's southern shore, founded in 1816. It is the Islay representative in the Classic Malts of Scotland collection, bottled at 43% in a 750ml bottle.
The whisky spends sixteen years in oak casks, including sherry-seasoned wood, and comes from what is described as the slowest distillation of any Islay distillery.
The nose is intense peat smoke and iodine over brine and seaweed, with pineapple, kippers and a persistent sweetness. On the palate, brine and tangy orange lead into creosote, kelp, figs, dates and vanilla. The finish is long.
