Lagavulin 12 Year Old The Ink of Legends is the 2023 Diageo Special Release, an Islay single malt in a 75cl bottle at a natural cask strength of 56.4% abv (112.8 proof). It is non-chill-filtered and has no added colouring.
For this release the whisky was given a secondary maturation in Don Julio Añejo tequila casks, a first for the expression. The packaging draws on Mesoamerican tattoo symbolism, linking the artwork to the tequila casks.
The nose combines sea air, lime zest, herbal smoke, pepper and bonfire with white chocolate, grilled pineapple and cooked agave. The palate is creamy, sweet and citrus-led before salt, plum and smoky heat arrive. The finish is long, salty and very smoky.
