Laizhou STR Red Wine Cask is a Chinese single malt from the Laizhou distillery in Qionglai, Sichuan. It is matured in red wine casks that have been shaved, toasted and re-charred in the distillery's own cooperage, and bottled at 46% without chill-filtration or added colour.
The mash is fermented for 72 hours, and a share of peated malt adds a restrained background smoke to the sweet, fruity profile. The nose brings ripe apple, stewed plum and fine vanilla, with a hint of smoke. The palate is creamy, almost buttery, with vanilla and intense caramel. The finish is long, sweet and soft, with melted caramel and a faint trace of smoke.
