This is a 30 year old Islay single malt from Laphroaig, the first of five releases telling the story of Ian Hunter. Hunter was related to the founding brothers and ran the distillery from 1908 to 1954, launching Laphroaig as a single malt and distributing it in the US.
Book 1, Unique Character, was matured in first-fill ex-bourbon barrels, reflecting Hunter's decision to introduce American oak. It is non-chill filtered, 46.7% ABV, in a faux hardback book case. 4800 bottles were produced.
The original smokiness has softened and sits with sweet vanilla. It is described as rounded, with sweet, zesty and medicinal notes.
