Old Elk Straight Rye 5 Year Old (75cl, 50%)

Old Elk Straight Rye is a five-year-old Colorado rye whiskey from Fort Collins, bottled at 50% ABV in a 75cl bottle. The mash bill is 95% rye and 5% malted barley. The distillery uses its own Slow Cut proofing method, adding water gradually over several weeks rather than over the usual 24 to 48 hours. The aim is to avoid the harsh heat that fast proofing can bring. The nose has ripe peach, cinnamon sugar, vanilla and baking spice. On the palate, rye spice, black pepper and allspice come first, then juicy peach, caramel and medium oak. The finish is medium to long and slightly drying, with toasted oak, caramel and black pepper.
