Port Ellen 42 Years is a single malt from Port Ellen Distillery on Islay, released for the distillery's 200th anniversary. The distillery was founded in 1825 and closed in 1983, and reopened in 2024. This is its first limited bottling since it returned to production.
The whisky was distilled in 1983 and matured for 42 years in European oak casks. Only 150 bottles were released, at 56.4% ABV in a 70cl bottle.
The nose is described as complex, with building smoke and berry notes including cranberries and red currants, along with brown sugar, raisins and plum. The palate is full-bodied and unctuous, with wood smoke, red berries, wood polish and stewed plum. The finish is very long, with fading smoke and black pepper.
