This is a single malt from the St. Magdalene distillery at Linlithgow, distilled in 1975 and bottled at 23 years old by Cadenhead's for its Authentic Collection. It matured in a bourbon butt and is a Lowland whisky of straw colour.
The nose is mineral and earthy, with flint, wet rock, damp clay, fermenting grass and lamp oil, plus patchouli, dried flowers and leather polish. Water brings out herbal notes, chalk, coal, green apple and gooseberry.
On the palate it opens sweet and malty, then turns green and grassy, becoming spicy, peppery and resinous with water. The finish is long, herbal and peppery.
