Van Winkle Special Reserve is a 12 year old bourbon in a 750ml bottle, bottled at 45.2% abv (90.4 proof). The maker pairs twelve years of ageing with a medium proof, and describes the whiskey as sweet and full-bodied, with an overall impression that is rich and deep. It is also put forward as an after-dinner drink able to rival a good cognac. The colour is a bright amber-orange. The nose is complex toffee, and the palate moves from a round, supple entry to a dry, medium-bodied middle with caramel, nuts and brown spices, ending in a long, enveloping finish.
