VAT 69 (70cl, 40%)

VAT 69 is a blended Scotch whisky without an age statement, combining malt and grain whiskies. It comes in a 70cl bottle at 40% ABV, is chill-filtered and has colouring added. The number in the name records a tasting decision rather than an age: William Sanderson had 100 different blends tasted, and the one numbered 69 was chosen. VAT 69 reached the market in 1882 and was first sold in port wine bottles. The nose is sweet malted barley and cereal with caramel and pear, plus a little spice. On the palate come barley and pear, fruity sweetness, a hint of sponge cake and peppery spice. The finish is malty and salty, with light smoke.
