Villa Oeiras Carcavelos Tinto 10 Year Old is a fortified red wine from Carcavelos, Portugal's smallest appellation, just west of Lisbon on the Tagus estuary. It is made from Castelao and Trincadeira, fermented with native yeasts, and aged ten years in oak barrels beneath the former palace of the Marquis de Pombal.
Villa Oeiras is the last active producer of Carcavelos. The wine is brought to 18% with vinho abafado, then aged oxidatively in the manner of a tawny port. The red is lighter in frame than most tawnies, with bright acidity and savoury depth.
The flavours are barley sugar, cocoa powder and cola over roasted nuts and baking spice. The finish is long and savoury.
