W.L. Weller Special Reserve is a Kentucky straight wheated bourbon, distilled and bottled at the Buffalo Trace Distillery in Frankfort. It is bottled at 90 proof (45%) in a 750ml bottle and aged in new charred American oak.
It is described as the original wheated bourbon: in 1849 William Larue Weller replaced rye with wheat in his mashbill, which gives a softer, rounder spirit than the rye-heavy majority of Kentucky bourbons.
The nose is sweet, with caramel, vanilla and honey. The palate is gentle, with butterscotch, brown sugar, soft oak and light fruit, and the finish is delicate, with a note of honeysuckle.
