This is a 16 year old straight bourbon from the A.H. Hirsch Reserve, distilled in spring 1974 in the small copper pot stills at Pennco Distillery (later Michter's) in Schaefferstown, Pennsylvania. The barrels were moved to Kentucky for final ageing and bottling.
It is the gold wax bottling, and one of the last releases overseen by Julian Van Winkle III before the brand passed to Sazerac. The 16 year old received America's first five-star spirits rating.
The nose is sweet, with creamy vanilla, caramel and oak spice. The palate brings toffee, vanilla and soft baking spices. The finish is dry and oaky, with smoke, baking spices and a touch of black pepper.
