This is a five-year-old Japanese single malt from Eigashima Shuzō, the country's oldest licensed whisky producer, which has held its licence since 1919.
It was matured in virgin American oak from the Ariake Sangyō cooperage in Kyoto, then finished for six months in Oloroso sherry casks. It is bottled at 50% ABV, without chill-filtration or added colour, in an edition of 1,000 bottles.
The nose brings dark cherries, orange marmalade and cassis, with a little nutmeg and crushed peppercorn. On the palate it recalls sherried fruitcake, with raisins, caramel, honeyed pear and gingerbread. The finish is long, with dried fruit, sweet tea and roasted spices.
