Hypernova is Ardbeg's 2022 Committee Release, a single malt from Islay described as the smokiest Ardbeg ever made. Its colour is a pale sulphur.
The nose is powerful and sharp, with tar, smoke, sea salt and a farmyard character, then blackcurrant blossom and peppermint. A drop of water brings out lavender and a hint of chocolate, followed by modelling clay and burnt rubber. The palate is peppery, with sweet chocolate, fresh mint, peat smoke and bitter almond, and the finish turns to roasted coffee and smoky heather.
