This is an 18 year old Ballechin, a Highland single malt distilled in 2003 and matured in a refill sherry butt. Whisky Sponge bottled it as Edition No.47 at 48.5% ABV, filling 353 bottles of 70cl.
Ballechin is a peated malt, and the nose is led by concentrated peat smoke, earthy, wet and medicinal, with leather, balsamic strawberries and honeycomb. The palate brings barbecue glaze and fireplace ash over a base of sherry: plums, raisins, burnt toffee, cinnamon and gentle pepper.
The finish is long, with ash, medicinal notes and brown sugar.
