This is a limited edition of Big Peat, a blended malt made for Douglas Laing's 75th anniversary. It is built from Islay single malts aged for ten years, then finished for two years in a single virgin Mizunara oak cask. The oak comes from Hokkaido in Japan. It is bottled at 48% ABV, from that one cask, which gives about 600 bottles.
The nose is sweet and soft, moving to charred oak and a touch of peat smoke. The palate is oily and mouth-filling, with a maritime character, gentle spice, damp earth and dried coconut. The finish brings rich oak, creamy caramel, allspice and fragrant smoke.
