Blandy's 5 Year Old Malmsey is a sweet fortified wine from the island of Madeira, made from Malvasia grapes. The wine is fermented off the skins in stainless steel, then fortified with neutral grape spirit to halt fermentation and keep its natural residual sugar.
It ages in American oak casks using the Canteiro system, starting on the warmest upper floors of the Funchal lodges and moving gradually to cooler floors below. It comes from the Blandy family, which founded the company in 1811.
The nose offers raisins, dried apricot, toffee, roasted nuts and orange peel. The palate is lush and honeyed, with butterscotch, caramel and candied citrus, held in shape by mineral acidity. The finish is long and warming, with caramel, charred oak and baked fruit.
