This is a single cask Chichibu, distilled in 2016 and aged for 8 years in a Bordeaux red wine cask that had held one of the best-known classed growths of Pauillac. Cask 14044 gave 268 bottles at 65.5% ABV, in 70cl bottles.
Chichibu is a Japanese single malt launched in 2008. Ichiro Akuto opened a second distillery on the other side of the town in 2019.
The nose is fine and complex, with rice powder, menthol, resin, candied lemon, almond milk, walnut and vanilla. The palate is juicy with grape and pear, then fig, date and currant. The finish is long and soft, with chocolate, honey, vanilla, cardamom and ginger.
