Fettercairn Vanguard 1st Release opens the distillery's Vanguard series as a limited small-batch single malt, continuing its Scottish Oak Programme. The spirit was distilled on 28 February 2008, matured for 14 years in first-fill ex-bourbon casks, then spent two years in hybrid casks of American oak staves and heavily toasted Scottish Highland oak heads, made with Speyside Cooperage.
It was married with an eight-year-old component from handpicked first-fill ex-bourbon casks, so the 14 years names only the older part. Bottled at 46.3%, it is non-chill-filtered and has no added colour.
Tasting notes mention honey, ripe pineapple and mango on the nose, grilled fruit and vanilla pod on the palate, and cassia spice in the finish.
