Fukano Select is an annual limited-edition rice whisky from Fukano Distillery in Hitoyoshi City, Kumamoto, bottled at 43% ABV in a 700ml bottle. It is non-chill-filtered.
It is distilled once in a stainless steel pot still from 100% rice, using koji, malted and unmalted rice. The whisky was developed with red wine casks, Manzanilla sherry casks, and new and refilled oak. The 2023 release drew on six single casks and ran to 4,172 bottles.
The nose is jammy red fruits, with stewed strawberry, ripe peach and red apple, plus cinnamon and a hint of cola. The palate moves from sweetness to dehydrated apple, black fruit pastilles and earthy wet clay. The finish is long, with spice and gentle umami.
