This Glenury Royal is a 55-year-old Highland single malt from the Diageo Rare Series. It was distilled in 1970 and bottled in 2026, after maturing in American oak hogsheads and then being married in European oak puncheons. Only 232 bottles were filled, at a cask strength of 62.4%, with no added colour and no chill-filtration.
The nose is reserved but clear, with dried apple and pear over a fine, woody smoke. The palate starts creamy and lightly sweet before gooseberry comes through, alongside burnt toffee, dried fruit and spice. A little water brings out spicy ginger. The finish is long, drying and warmly spiced, with a faint note of smoke remaining.
